Characteristics of Successful Quitters

A clear profile of the successful quitter emerged after research into the differences between those who succeeded in stopping smoking, and those who relapsed. How does your attitude compare?

How likely is it that YOU will succeed? To find out, answer YES or NO to the following questions:


Successful quitters were typically highly dissatisfied with themselves for smoking
- Do you feel you're letting yourself and others down by smoking?
- Do you feel you are a weak character for smoking?
- Do you despair at your lack of self-control as a smoker?
- Do you feel people look down on you as a smoker?
- Do you hate what smoking does to your body?
- Do you hate the way smoking makes you smell?
- Do you think smoking makes you look unattractive?

Successful quitters saw themselves as being over-dependent on smoking
- Do you dread running out of cigarettes?
- Does smoking limit where you go and what you do?
- Do you hate being dictated to by smoking?
- Do you long to be free of the tyranny of smoking?

Successful quitters believed they were more negatively affected by their habit than most smokers
- Do you have a smoker's cough?
- Do you tire easily?
- Do you avoid exercise?
- Do you worry that smoking will kill you?
- Do you smoke when ill?
- Do you have a heart or lung condition?
- Do you have an illness or condition that is made worse by smoking?
- Do you get lots of chest or throat infections or colds?

Successful quitters are more flexible
- Are you prepared to change old habits?
- Would you make changes to your social life?
- Would you choose a restaurant specifically because it was non-smoking?
- Would you be prepared avoid smoking environments for a time?
- Would you give up smoking triggers such as tea or coffee or alcohol if necessary?
- Would you be willing to take up a new hobby or pastime?

Successful quitters are more strongly determined to quit
- Do you believe its not enough to just 'try' to quit?
- Have you decided you won't have a cigarette even if you badly want one?
- Have you decided you will NEVER smoke again?
- HAVE YOU DECIDED TO BECOME A NON-SMOKER - WHATEVER IT TAKES?

Successful quitters make more efforts to minimise the obstaces to quitting
- Would you make changes to your lifestyle?
- Would you avoid the pub for a while if necessary?
- Would you try to mix only with non-smokers for a while?
- Would you plan the best time to quit?
- Would you read self-help books on quitting?
- Would you learn techniques to minimise stress?

Successful quitters are more prepared to tolerate discomfort
- Do you tell yourself it will be hard for a while but it WILL pass?
- Have you decided that becoming a non-smoker is worth the relatively short period of discomfort?
- Do have plans for dealing with withdrawal symptoms?
- HAVE YOU DECIDED TO BECOME A NON-SMOKER - WHATEVER IT TAKES?

Successful quitters are less bothered by withdrawal symptoms
- Instead of dwelling on withdrawal symptoms will you just make light of them?
- Will you avoid seeking sympathy from others for your 'suffering'?
- If/when you have symptoms, will you just tell yourself 'it will pass'?
